You’re probably more familiar with ginger as the spicy flavoring in ginger ale.  You might even know that it is an effective anti-nausea treatment.

But did you know that it can be helpful for weight loss?

From revving your metabolism to speeding up digestion, ginger might just do the trick.  If you want to get into the nitty-gritty, here’s the scoop on ginger.

This unassuming root contains gingerols, a group of different types of resins that have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory abilities. These can help heal and invigorate your body, creating a favorable environment for weight loss.

You can find fresh ginger root in any grocery store, or purchase capsules if you just aren’t that into the taste.

Either way, you’ll gain value from this spice that can go a long way in helping you towards your goals.

So if you’re looking for an easy addition to your weight loss plan, take a look at what ginger can do for you:

1. Can Help With Digestive Problems

This pungent spice has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a digestive aid.

It helps stimulate the intestinal tract and helps move things along.  Keeping your digestion working properly is important for weight loss. If you’re not flowing smoothly, you’re not getting all the nutrients from your food!

We all know that nutrient deficiencies are no joke, and ginger can help ensure you are getting the maximum benefits from every nutrient that enters your body.

Another weight loss perk you may not have thought of is its ability to kick nausea to the curb.  When we’re not feeling well, we tend to make less-healthy food choices.

2. Rev Up Your Metabolism

Ginger may also help boost your metabolism. As someone interested in fat loss, you might want to listen to this part!

Your metabolism is a complex series of events in which calories and nutrients are used in your body.  The long and short of it is that the higher your metabolism, the more calories you burn just staying alive.

A higher metabolism will help your body burn more calories while going through basic functions such as digestion and tissue repair.  This means less time spent in the gym for the same amount of food eaten. I know you like the sound of that!

So it makes sense that keeping the metabolic rate higher is beneficial to you as a dieter.

Enter ginger!  Another way ginger can help is by lowering blood sugar after eating some types of carbohydrates.  Spikes in blood sugar can be detrimental to your weight loss, so keeping it under control will keep your weight loss going.

3. Boost Your Immunity

ginger boosts immune system

When we are dieting, whether we like it or not, we are putting some amount of stress on our bodies. Often, this opens us up to increased illness. Ginger to the rescue!

Ginger is well-known in the natural healing community for its abilities as an immune booster.  By stimulating your lymphatic system, your body will be ready to fight off any illness that comes knocking.

As a scrappy bacterial fighter, you can’t beat ginger!

In one study, it was shown to be even more effective against diseases such as staph and strep than several commonly used antibiotics!

How’s that for a surprise?  Not that’s were suggesting you ditch the drugs, but perhaps consider adding ginger to your regimen.

Another way ginger is helpful is the way it warms your body and gets the blood flowing. Try drinking a cup of hot ginger tea, and tell me you don’t feel alive!

These are just a few ways ginger can help you stay healthy and on the right track for your weight loss goals.  Keep reading for more!

4. Detox Your Cells

As we mentioned in the previous section, ginger stimulates the lymphatic system in the body. Your lymph system is one of the most important aspects of your bodies ‘self-cleaning’ system.

When you’re sick, you’ve probably noticed the lymph nodes can get swollen, especially under your jawline. Ginger can help by keeping things moving so that these nodes don’t stop the flow of lymphatic fluid.

Keep those channels open, and you’ll see toxins drain from your tissues.  This will keep you healthy and strong, and ready to hit the gym!

5. Enhance Satiety

According to recent research, drinking ginger tea while eating can increase your feeling of fullness.  They also discovered that it could help increase the calories burned while eating!

How can this help you?

By keeping hunger at bay, you’ll reduce the need to snack between meals. And when you do eat, you’ll burn off a few more calories just through your digestive process!

If you’re ready to jump right in, here’s a short video on how to make delicious Ginger-Lemon Tea.  It also goes over the benefits you’ll notice if you make this a part of your daily routine.

6. So How do I Eat This Weird Root?

Excellent question, I was getting to that eventually! There are many ways to get ginger into your day, such as the tea listed in the previous section.

Taking fresh ginger in the form of tea is one of the better ways to get your dose of gingerols. By lightly simmering the pieces of root in water, you’ll get the full benefits of all the nutrients contained in it.

What if tea isn’t your thing?

Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered.

And the list goes on.

If you just can’t stand the taste, consider taking it in capsules. You’ll get many of the same benefits as from the fresh root.  I recommend this brand by Herbal Secrets.

There’s such a thing as ‘too much of a good thing,’ so don’t go adding ginger to everything you eat or drink!  I also recommend ginger tea by Stash, because it also has a hint of lemon, which makes it taste great!

    1. Hey Gladis, no, unfortunately the fresh ginger and powdered have different benefits. Many of the medicinal benefits of fresh ginger are lost when it is made in to ground ginger.
