10 Things to Do When You Find Out You Have Type II Diabetes
So you’ve found out you have diabetes…
What should you do next?
There can be lots of confusion, and you probably have a lot of questions. That’s okay. It’s 100% normal to be a little lost when it comes to type II diabetes.
Being diagnosed with diabetes can be overwhelming, but remember that you are not alone. Over 135 million Americans in 2015 were diagnosed, and the numbers continue to grow!
This is a great 10-step checklist to follow if you have discovered that you have type II diabetes.
Take another look at your health care provider.
Managing diabetes can be an expensive endeavor, especially when you don’t have the right healthcare provider.
Call your provider, and discuss your condition and terms.
Make sure your provider covers DSMES (Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support).
Don’t let the past haunt you.
There is nothing that can be done about the past. It’s done. The only control you have is over your present decisions and what you are currently doing.
It’s natural to think: “What did I do wrong?” and “Why is this happening to me?” However, that will not get you anywhere…
Shift your thinking to: “What can I do about this?” Start being proactive in decision making, and focus on the things you CAN control.
Create your diabetes eating plan.
There is a lot of variance in most diabetic programs; however, the two staples to focus on are activity and diet.
Keeping steady and consistent track of these things has been shown to greatly improve the happiness and success of a diabetic program.
Use a journal or app on a smartphone to keep track!
Don’t give up!
A big problem with people who get diagnosed is that they give up. They are encouraged to shirk responsibility and just “accept” their condition.

Getting support is crucial for managing diabetes. Connecting with others can help motivate and reinvigorate you for your goals.
