How to Start a Fitness Blog in 2019 – Step-by-Step Beginner’s Guide
Why start a fitness blog? 10 months ago, Lauren and I were just a couple frustrated young professionals looking to make money online and escape the 9-5. We were tired of chasing fleeting weekends and vacations that never lasted long enough.
In less than a year, we started our blog (Avocadu.com) completely from scratch and make over $20,000/month with our little health and fitness blog.
The best part is that YOU can do this too!
Blogging is an awesome opportunity and starting a fitness blog can be great for a variety of reasons:
- Become the fittest and best version of yourself
- Learn more about your passion
- Help others
- Make a full-time income from anywhere
- So many other things!
Okay, let’s get started!
Step 1. Visit Create and Go’s walkthrough.
Our other blog, has a simple step-by-step tutorial that teaches you how to start a blog from scratch. Start with that link and then move onto the next steps below!
This is the step-by-step process to getting your WordPress blog set up.
There also a video walkthrough for those who like that more than an article:
Once you’ve reached step #6 in that tutorial it’s time to move on to step #2 on this page.
Step 2. Follow these steps to get everything set up.
The best part about using a platform like WordPress is all the many amazing themes that are available to you!
Specifically for fitness blogs, the top-rated themes are:
My personal favorite from the list is Divi Theme.
It’s a great theme for beginners because it’s super customizable but also very easy to use!
Now, some of you are probably wondering what theme we use here at Avocadu…
Well, it’s the Genesis Framework, which does happen to be the fastest theme on the market BUT…
We do NOT recommend this theme for beginners. It’s too expensive and complex for beginners.
We only switched to Genesis once we could invest the money to pay a website design to custom design our website for us.
P.S. When you sign up for Divi, you will also get access to the entire Elegant Themes package that comes with over 70 other themes to choose from!
Step 3. Create your first post.
It’s best to keep it simple when you write your first blog post.
We recommend telling your audience a little bit about yourself and why you started your blog.
To add a new post, click on Posts –> Add New from your WordPress dashboard menu.
The first step is to name your first blog post. Here are some suggestions:
- Welcome to my new [insert blog topic] blog!
- Why I Started My Blog About [insert blog topic]
Next, let’s move on to the main content of your post!
I recommend including an image of yourself because it gives you a chance to make a personal connection with your reader.
To add an image to your blog, click the plus button or the image icon. Then click “Upload Media.”
Then select your photo from your computer and upload it to WordPress.
Once you’ve uploaded a photo, add a new text/media block underneath your photo:
Now it’s time to tell your audience a little about yourself and why you started your blog.
Here are some ideas of talking points:
- What got you interested in your blog topic and what made you finally start your blog about it?
- What do you want to help others with?
- Do you have a mission statement or a core belief about your blog topic that you can share with your audience?
Include anything in here that you think your audience would be interested in or that you think would help build that initial connection with them.
When you’re finished, make sure to thank your reader for visiting your blog!
You can also ask them to leave a comment below the article if they enjoyed it or have any questions for you.
This is a great way to start building a relationship with your readers!
Publish Your Post
After you’ve written your post, you need to actually click the “Publish” button to make it live on your blog!
Once it’s published, there will be a link at the top of the screen to view your post.
After you’ve published your blog post, you can share a link on your Facebook account or send the link to family members or friends if you’d like to share it with anyone!
Step 4. Start designing and get familiar with your new blog.
Getting your blog design right takes a little bit of “tinkering around” in WordPress.
There is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to learning the ins and outs of WordPress. It’s designed to be very easy to use, but it does still take some getting used to.
